Unknown members of the Massachusetts Tribe

  • Native people lived in this area for over 9,000 years before colonists arrived.

  • Between 1616 and 1619 a catastrophic plague killed tens of thousands of Native people in communities from Cape Cod to Maine.

  • The depiction of one of the Native men may be intended to be Squanto, a Wampanoag from Patuxet, who was among 20 men kidnapped as slaves and taken to Spain in 1614.

  • Squanto is only Native man known to have returned home. From Spain he was sold to an British businessman, and  kept in London where he learned to speak English.  Squanto was brought back to this area in 1619 as an interpreter for British business ventures, he died a year later.
